  • Memory and Learning. Sleep organizes and helps you recover memories. When you learn something new, sleep solidifies it in your brain. If only you could have spent more time in college sleeping?

  • Moods and Behaviors. Those fancy parts of the brain that control emotions, decision-making, and social interactions slow down during sleep, which means optimal performance when awake. When you’re tired, you’re cranky. Nobody likes you when you’re cranky. 

  • Nervous System. Sleep experts suggest that neurons used during the day repair themselves during sleep. Sleep deprivation results in an impaired nervous system because neurons never get the chance to regenerate.

  • Immune System. Without adequate sleep, the immune system becomes weak, and the body becomes more vulnerable to infection and disease. And really, who enjoys infection or disease?

  • Growth and Development. Growth hormones are released during sleep—it’s the time when you do most of your growing and developing. Who knew?
