This Section is a Snoozer.

For those who slept through their 10th grade science class on the subject of sleep, let’s review. There are five sleep stages. The Drowsy Stage, which lasts about 10 minutes. The Light Sleep Stage, where your eyes begin to flutter. During the next two sleep stages, Deep Sleep, you are difficult to awaken. Somewhere between 70 and 90 minutes of sleep, you begin the REM stage.

This is the stage that everyone loves, because this is the important stage where you dream, and body functions are restored and rejuvenated. Here’s the kicker. You get kicked back to stage one when sleep is interrupted. You need to go through all of your cycles again to get to the REM stage. That’s why you can sleep nine hours, awaken several times and still feel tired the next day. (New moms and dads, we know what you’re going through!) And then go and sleep six hours of blissful uninterrupted sleep, and wake feeling like a whole new person.
